Catch-sized trout is planted into the Lipakka region of the Kemijoki River and a part of the main channel of the Kairijoki River stretching from Ylä-Kairi to Saunakoski Rapids. The rest of the destination is reserved for catching wild fish. Most of the fish plantings are conducted in the main channel of the Kairijoki River. Large whitefish also migrates into the Kairijoki River from the Kemijoki River.
The destination contains 150 kilometres of river waters suitable for canoeing. The majority of the main channel of the Kairijoki River consists of big and small rapids sections that are ideal for fly fishing. The main channel of the Kemijoki River alternates between small and mild rapids and fast-flowing yet level sections that are also great for casting. The fishing and canoeing sections of this wilderness destination are located within reach of the road network. The side streams are home to naturally breeding populations of brown trout and brook trout.
NOTE: In Kairijoki River area, the Ylimmäinen Vasaoja and Alimmainen Vasaoja lean-to shelters were taken down in summer 2021.

Purchasing Information
In Korvatunturi angling permit area, the customer can choose between a validity period of 24 hours, 7 days or the entire season. The season permit is only valid in the waters of the Kemijoki River from above Kairinjokisuu to below Uuraojansuu. The prices of angling permits are as follows:

Persons under 18 years of age can buy the angling permit at half price.
Persons under 15 years of age may fish under the angling permit and within the fishing quota of an adult belonging to the same party, without needing to purchase an angling permit of their own.
A family may purchase a family permit, which costs twice as much and has a fishing quota twice as large as an individual angling permit. A family consists of children under 18 years of age and their parents or legal guardians as well as married and common-law couples.

Permit terms for the area
In the main channel of Kairijoki River between Aarto-ojansuu and Ylä-Kairi Bridge: 1.6–1.10. Fishing period in the rest of the Korvatunturi area: calendar year. Trout fishing is prohibited between 1.9.–30.11.Exceptions to the fishing period
Fishing in the main channel of the Kairijoki River between Aarto-ojansuu and Ylä-Kairi bridge is only permitted between 1 June and 1 October. This area is marked on the permit area map.

Regional restrictions
The Kairijoki River has a fly fishing area where fishing is only permitted with fly fishing tackle. The fly fishing area is divided into two parts. The first part starts at Majavasokka Bridge and ends at Murkinahauta on the border of Vasaköngäs permit area. The second part starts at Järviseljänpalo on the northern border of Vasaköngäs permit area and ends at the lower part of Suksenköngäs. The borders of the permit area are marked in the terrain with blue fly fishing signs.
400 metres below the Kairiver Bridge there is an area, a so-called children's pool, where fishing is only allowed to anglers under 15 years of age.
In the vicinity of the rental cabins one must avoid causing unnecessary harm or disturbance to the persons renting the cabin.
What does the permit entitle the holder to
All visitors fishing in Korvatunturi permit area must obtain Korvatunturi 3546 angling permit.
As general fishing rights do not apply within Matildanjärvi angling permit area, it is prohibited to fish there with a lure under a fisheries management fee as well as fish with a rod and line (hook and line fishing), and through a hole in the ice in wintertime (ice fishing), unless the angler has obtained an angling permit. The Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY) has issued the decision on restricting general fishing rights.
Hook and line fishing and ice fishing are prohibited in rapids and running waters where there are migratory fish routes, regardless of whether you have an angling permit or not. In addition hook and line fishing and ice fishing are also prohibited between Aarto-ojansuu and the old Ylä-Kairi bridge.
Fishing gear
An angler may use one (1) rod with a single line. The rod must be held in the angler’s hand or be within reach at all times (no more than 2 metres away).
Only fly fishing without a casting weight is permitted in the fly fishing area.
Catch quotas
The maximum number of fish that an angler may catch is indicated in the table below:

There is no catch quota limit for other fish species.
The 24-hour catch quota cannot be increased by purchasing several permits for the same 24-hour period.

NOTE! Some of the less used service sites have been removed. There are no garbage collection points at the sites and people should bring their garbage to the garbage container near the bridge leading to the Kairiver Wilderness Centre.
