Metsähallitus does not sell fishing permits for Vetsijoki River or Utsjoki River this year.
The main channel of Utsjoki River is one of the most important tributaries of Tana River. The river runs through several large lakes and there are many lake-like quiet sections. The river area is easily accessible from the Inari-Utsjoki road.
Utsjoki is an important spawning river for salmon living in the Arctic Ocean. The efforts to safeguard and grow the river's salmon stocks are based on having an adequate spawning stock and limiting the number of fishing permits. Fishing in the river is regulated with permit terms and rules defined for tributary waters.
The area is inhabited and there are privately owned waters that are not part of the permit area.
The number of this permit area will change in 2024. The new number is 1326.

The number of angling permits is limited. Please check the availability of permits prior to your trip.
There are 180 (12-hour) fishing permits available for Utsjoki angling permit area. A maximum of six (6) persons can purchase an angling permit for the same day.
If you have ordered your permit by phone, you must ensure that the permit is paid for in full by the due date indicated on the invoice.
PERMIT PRICE AND VALIDITY
Utsjoki angling permit costs 20 euros per 12 hours. Validity of a permit begins at 7:00 AM or at 7:00 PM.
Persons under 18 years of age can buy the angling permit at half price.
Persons under 15 years of age may fish under the angling permit and within the fishing quota of an adult belonging to the same party, without needing to purchase an angling permit of their own.
A family may purchase a family permit, which costs twice as much and has a fishing quota twice as large as an individual angling permit. A family consists of children under 18 years of age and their parents or legal guardians as well as married and common-law couples.

There is a weekly protection period of 24 hours. During this period all fishing is prohibited. The protection period starts on Sundays at 7 PM and ends on Mondays at 7 PM.
Water areas and regional restrictions that are included in this angling permit
The permit area strecthes from Utsjoki-Nuorgam road (where there is a bridge over Utsjoki River) to Lake Kevojärvi.
Utsjoki angling permit entitles you to fish only in the area designated on the permit area map. There are several private water areas and other areas where fishing is prohibited. Utsjoki angling permit does not entitle you to fish in these water areas.
Anglers must check the borders of the permit area on the permit area map.
Fishing gear, bait and waste
Lures and flies are permitted.
In the municipalities of Upper Lapland (incl. the Utsjoki angling permit area) it is prohibited to use bait fish when hook and line fishing, ice fishing or lure fishing. This is to prevent the spread of the Gyrodactylys salaris parasite. To prevent the spread of other parasites, it is recommended to bury the waste after gutting the fish you have caught.
To prevent the spread of the Gyrodactylys salaris parasite, all fishing gear brought in from outside Utsjoki angling permit area must be completely dry upon arrival or they must be disinfected at a disinfection station before you start fishing. If requested, a proof of disinfection must be presented to the fishing supervisor. A proof of disinfection is provided by the following disinfection stations:

These actions to stop the Gyrodactylys salaris parasite are based on the decree by the Finnish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
Catch quotas
The maximum number of fish that an angler may catch is indicated in the table below:

There is no catch quota limit for other fish species.
Metsähallitus recommends catching humpback salmon and chum salmon.

Please note
There are many private water and land areas by Utsjoki River. Traversing across these private areas is prohibited and cars must not be parked along entryways leading to private lands. When fishing, please respect the privacy of these properties.
