Interested in aerial images, hiking trails or campfire sites? Make the most of Eräluvat.fi’s maps!
Every fishing and hunting area and hut has a page with a map window that shows the location of the destination. In case of permit areas, you can see the borders of the area. Did you know that you can choose what and how information is displayed on the map?
Start by clicking the map window in the upper left corner to enlarge the map. Then find the button representing map layers on the right side – it’s the second one from the top. Here you will find a lot of options to customize the map view.
The map windows in the Eräluvat.fi service use Metsähallitus' Retkikartta service directly, so all the same functions as in Retkikartta.fi are available.
Background maps
The default background for destination maps is a topographic map. However, sometimes a simpler background map helps to see the borders of the permit area better, especially if the area is fragmented. In such cases, try switching to the option called ‘background map'!
From the same place, you can also choose an aerial image as the background map. The aerial image allows you to see better what kind of forest or shores are in the area.
If you want the permit area to be more clearly visible on the map, click the drop next to the layer ‘selected feature’. Now you can darken the area so that it stands out more clearly.
Map layers
Below the background maps, you can choose which areas and services are displayed on the map. In the excursion services, you can find, for example, huts, campfire sites, lean-to shelters, boat ramps, bridges, and much more. Check map layer ‘routes’ to see both summer and winter trails.
Bonuses
A few more tips:
- You can choose depth contours at the very bottom of the map layer menu.
- From the tools menu, you can print the map view exactly the way you want. You can also add your own notes to the map.
- Fishers know that latitude matter for catch size limits. When you switch the coordinate system to ETRS89 (~WGS84) from the bottom left, you can see the latitude at the bottom as you move on the map.
