Arrival instructions

  • The most popular nearby starting point and parking area all year round is the spacious Rykimäkero parking area along the Pyhä-Luosto road (no. 962), about 20 km from Pyhä towards Luosto. In summer and autumn, the Rykimäkuru trail marked with red squares (hiking and mountain biking trail) starts from the parking lot. If you follow the route clockwise, through the Rykimäkero and Rykimäkuru campfire spots, the distance to the hut is about 3.6 km. The trail runs about 100 m from the hut, at this point the way to the hut is marked with a rust-brown metal sign. There is no winter hiking trail to the hut. In winter starting from week 8, there is a maintained cross-country ski track that you can use with skis. In winter before week 8, you need snowshoes or forest skis to reach the hut.

  • In summer there is also a rather un-noticeable, small parking area next to the Pyhä-Luosto road about 17 km from Pyhä towards Luosto. From there it is about 1,5 km walking distance to the hut. The trail is not clearly marked but it is quite easy to follow. This parking place has no winter maintenance.

By public transportation

Yard

A dry toilet, a wood shed and a campfire site at the yard. There is also a shelter for the cooled ashes.

Keys

The key is in a key cabinet on the hut wall. The cabinet is protected with a code. Instructions and the code are sent to you by e-mail at the time of booking.

Facilities

Heating and lighting

  • The hut has a stove for heating. There is firewood in the wood shed. Please use firewood sparingly. Please note that it takes some time before the hut is properly warm.

  • The hut has no electricity. We recommend using a headlamp, which leaves your hands free to do chores around the hut. For safety reasons, candles must be burned on a non-combustible surface and constantly monitored.

Cooking

  • A gas stove and necessary cooking utensils (a pot, a frying pan, a coffee pot).

  • Bring your own utensils and tableware.

Drinking water

  • There is no running water in the hut.

  • Drinking water is taken from the River Pyhäjoki and it can be used in the sauna as well. In the woodshed you find tools to break the ice in the winter. It is recommended to boil water from natural sources before consumption. The water is not tested. Drink water taken directly from nature at your own risk.

  • See tips on how to obtain safe drinking water on a hike (Nationalparks.fi).

Staying overnight

  • A sleeping platform with two upper beds, mattresses and a few emergency blankets.

  • Please bring your own sleeping bag.

Sauna

  • A wood heated sauna is in the hut building. The sauna is shared between the guests of Kuukkeli room 1 and Kuukkeli room 2. The sauna key can be found inside the rented room, always return it to its place after use. Please note that it takes some time before the sauna is properly warm.

  • Remember to empty all the water containers and buckets before you leave. This is important especially in winter time as they will break if water freezes in them.

Toilet

There is a dry toilet near the hut. Please bring your own toilet paper.

Waste disposal

There are no waste containers by the cabin. Visitors are advised to take their accumulated waste with them.

Metsähallitus follows the principles of litter-free hiking. Visitors are adviced to bring their own waste out of the area. Read more about hiking without littering (nationalparks.fi).

Other things to keep in mind

  • There are no accessible services in the hut.

  • Please clean the hut before you leave.

  • Please do not leave anything, especially food in the hut. Leftover food can attract rodents and insects.

Safety

  • Although Finland has a broad network for mobile phones, there are some areas in the park without signal. If this happens try to climb to a higher place or go into an open area. Check the mobile network coverage with your mobile phone operator before your trip.

  • There are fire alarms at wilderness huts, but we recommend to bring a 9 V battery and/or your own travel fire alarm with you.

  • Read more about the area and its current information at Nationalparks.fi.
