Renovation of habitats

A fishing permit is an investment in nature, as Metsähallitus uses the revenues earned from permit sales for, among other things, the management of fishing waters and communications.

Together with its partners, Metsähallitus invests hundreds of thousands of euros annually in the management of fishing waters. Running waters are restored by, for example, creating new gravel spawning beds, diversifying the structure of riverbeds or restoring the flow of water to a dry channel. The 30,000 hectares of mires restored by Metsähallitus also enhances water conservation at the catchment area level.

Fish habitats are also taken into consideration in forestry work

The environmental guide published by Metsähallitus Forestry Ltd. explains how water conservation and fish stocks are taken into consideration in routine forest management work in state-owned commercial forests:

• Streams and small bodies of water are nature sites to be kept away from logging operations. An untouched buffer zone is left around streams and small bodies of water to protect their microclimates and fish populations.
• When making road repairs, culverts must always be built to allow fish to swim upstream.
