Metsähallitus and Simojoen Nousulohi Ry (a local fishermen's association) have made an agreement to create Simojoki joint permit area (2581). This permit covers nearly all of the waters of the Simojoki River within the municipal borders of Simo. The size, flow-rate and numerous rapids of the Simojoki River make it ideal for fly and lure fishing, but trolling without a motor is also a possibility. There is a separate permit for fishing in the Simojoki River on the Ranua side of the municipal border, Simojoki, Ranua 2580.
The area has been actively maintained, especially with regard to salmon spawning grounds and nursery areas. The vibrant grayling stock in the area also means that the Simojoki River is an excellent destination for grayling fishers. There is also a good chance of hooking a perch or pike in the more slow-flowing areas.
Primarily 1 January – 31 December. There is a weekly protection period of 24 hours 15 June –31 August.
Check the permit terms for all exceptions to the fishing period.

Not all information on angling permit areas has yet been translated into English and Swedish on the renewed Eräluvat.fi service. For this reason, not all angling permits can yet be purchased as a self-service. However, the permits can be purchased through Eräluvat customer service.

Every fishing and hunting area and hut has a page with a map window that shows the location of the destination. In case of permit areas, you can see the borders of the area. Did you know that you can choose what and how information is displayed on the map?
The need for an angling permit depends on the type of waterbody and how many rods and lures you will use.
In this permit area, you will need an angling permit when lure fishing in sections with rapids and running water. You will also be required to pay the fisheries management fee, unless you are under 18 years of age, over 70 years of age, or are 65 years of age or older as of 31 December 2023.
If you are lure fishing with only one rod and lure in still waters, such as river pools, payment of the fisheries management fee is sufficient. You will also require an angling permit when fishing with multiple rods or lures.
Hook and line fishing and ice fishing are fully prohibited in running and rapids sections of waters with migratory fish stocks (i.e. also this permit area). In still waters, hook and line fishing and ice fishing are permitted free of charge with one rod. If you are hook and line fishing or ice fishing with more than one rod, you are required to purchase an angling permit and pay the fisheries management fee.
Always make sure to check the location of the permit area. Please see either the map window or the PDF map on this page. Enlarge the map window to view the location of the permit area more clearly.
Simojoki joint permit area 2581 covers nearly all of the waters of the Simojoki River within the municipality of Simo. There are also some private waters within the Simojoki River which do not belong to Simojoki joint permit. Check the PDF map to see where they are located. NOTE! The destination map on the map window only displays state-owned waters.
Fishers must avoid fishing and moving around in the immediate vicinity of cottages, houses, saunas and docks.
Simojoki area offers versatile hiking and lodging services. There are also several maintained lean-to shelters and campfire sites in the area. The Simojoki River is also a great destination for canoeing enthusiasts.

The Simojoki River is home to a naturally reproducing salmon stock. The number of salmon rising up the river has increased in recent years. The Natural Resources Institute Finland monitors the rising of salmon at kalahavainnot.luke.fi (in Finnish).
