The Karvionkoski Rapids, roaring between the large route waters of Lake Suvasvesi and Lake Kermajärvi, is located along the road from Varkaus to Joensuu. Karvionkoski is 50 km away from Varkaus and 70 km away from Joensuu. You can reach the area by boat via the water routes, as well.
Most of the permit area consists of evenly flowing waters, but one can also experience the thrill of white waters by the channel of Karvio. Near Karvionkoski are also the Valamo and Lintula monasteries, where anglers interested in culture can hike along the marked Monastery Trail (Luostaripolku).
The fish stocks at Karvionkoski are based on both fry stockings and natural reproduction. At Karvionkoski, a lucky angler has the chance to catch a brown trout. Above and below the rapids, in the boat fishing area, one can catch a pike-perch, pike or perch.

Not all information on angling permit areas has yet been translated into English and Swedish on the renewed Eräluvat.fi service. For this reason, not all angling permits can yet be purchased as a self-service. However, the permits can be purchased through Eräluvat customer service.

Every fishing and hunting area and hut has a page with a map window that shows the location of the destination. In case of permit areas, you can see the borders of the area. Did you know that you can choose what and how information is displayed on the map?
The number of anglers is restricted. No more than eight persons may fish simultaneously in the Karvionkoski permit area. Please check in advance whether permits are available for the desired time period.
The need for an angling permit depends on the type of waterbody and how many rods and lures you will use.
In this permit area, you will need an angling permit when lure fishing in sections with rapids and running water. You will also be required to pay the fisheries management fee, unless you are under 18 years of age, over 70 years of age, or are 65 years of age or older as of 31 December 2023.
If you are lure fishing with only one rod and lure in still waters, such as river pools, payment of the fisheries management fee is sufficient. You will also require an angling permit when fishing with multiple rods or lures.
Hook and line fishing and ice fishing are fully prohibited in running and rapids sections of waters with migratory fish stocks (i.e. also this permit area). In still waters, hook and line fishing and ice fishing are permitted free of charge with one rod. If you are hook and line fishing or ice fishing with more than one rod, you are required to purchase an angling permit and pay the fisheries management fee.
Please note that the Karvionkoski angling permit area practically comprises of flowing water only.

There is a campfire site and a boat launch ramp nearby. There is also a camping area, holiday resort, service station and general store in the area.
Brown trout fry are stocked in Karvionkoski. All stocked trout older than one year have had their adipose fins cut.
Gravel spawning pits have been built at the top of the rapids in the spring of 2016.
