Angling permit area

The majority of the main channel of the Kairijoki River consists of big and small rapids sections that are ideal for fly fishing. The main channel of the Kemijoki River alternates between small and mild rapids and fast-flowing yet level sections that are also great for casting. The fishing and canoeing sections of this wilderness destination are located within reach of the road network. The destination contains 150 kilometres of river waters suitable for canoeing.

Catch-sized trout is planted into a part of the main channel of the Kairijoki River stretching from Ylä-Kairi to Saunakoski Rapids. The rest of the destination is reserved for catching wild fish. Large whitefish also migrates into the Kairijoki River from the Kemijoki River. The side streams are home to naturally breeding populations of brown trout and brook trout.

Restrictions
The Kairijoki River has a fly fishing area where fishing is only permitted with fly fishing tackle. In addition to this, there is a so-called children's pool, where fishing is only allowed to anglers under 15 years of age. Check the restrictions carefully in the permit terms.

The season permit is only valid in the waters of the Kemijoki River from above Kairinjokisuu to below Uuraojansuu. 

Permits needed for fishing

In this permit area, you will need an angling permit for all types of fishing. You will also be required to pay the fisheries management fee, unless you are under 18 years of age, over 70 years of age, or are 65 years of age or older as of 31 December 2023.

Hook and line fishing and ice fishing are fully prohibited in rapids and running sections of waters with migratory fish stocks (i.e. also this permit area). In still waters, such as river pools, hook and line fishing and ice fishing are permitted with one rod with an angling permit.

Fly fishing areas

The Kairijoki River has a fly fishing area where fishing is only permitted with fly fishing tackle. The fly fishing area is divided into two parts. The first part starts at Majavasokka Bridge and ends at Murkinahauta on the border of Vasaköngäs permit area. The second part starts at Järviseljänpalo on the northern border of Vasaköngäs permit area and ends at the lower part of Suksenköngäs. The borders of the permit area are marked in the terrain with blue fly fishing signs.

Children's pool

400 metres below the Kairiver Bridge there is an area, a so-called children's pool, where fishing is only allowed to anglers under 15 years of age.

Other considerations

In the vicinity of the rental cabins one must avoid causing unnecessary harm or disturbance to the persons renting the cabin.

Hook and line fishing and ice fishing are prohibited between Aarto-ojansuu and the old Ylä-Kairi bridge.

Services in the area

The area has lean-to shelters, huts, cooking shelters, campfire sites and boat launches.

Some of the less used service sites have been removed. There are no garbage collection points at the sites and people should bring their garbage to the garbage container near the bridge leading to the Kairiver Wilderness Centre.
