5001 Suomussalmi

The permit covers almost 22,000 hectares of state-owned water areas in the municipality of Suomussalmi. The largest water areas are found in Lake Kiantajärvi (over 7,400 hectares), which is known for its diverse fish population. Other major fishing areas are Lake Vuokkijärvi, Pesiöjärvi, and Korvuanjärvi. The permit area encompasses also over two hundred smaller wilderness lakes and ponds.

Permits needed for fishing

Trap fishing in this permit area always requires a trap permit. You will also be required to pay the fisheries management fee, unless you are under 18 years of age, over 70 years of age, or are 65 years of age or older as of 31 December 2023.

Fisheries management

The Suomussalmi trap permit area consists of regulated waters that the power company stocks with whitefish, trout, landlocked salmon, pike-perch and grayling to compensate for the negative impacts of regulation.

Metsähallitus also stocks the waters outside the regulation area with one-summer old whitefish fry.
