Arrival instructions
Summer and autumn: you can hike or mountain bike to the hut. The Pyhä-Luosto Hiking Trail (marked with yellow) runs about 1,3 km from the hut.
Winter: you can get to the hut by snowshoeing or skiing with forest skis or from week 8 onwards by skiing the maintained cross country ski track. There is also a Metsähallitus snowmobile track very close by, snowmobiling lisence is required (eraluvat.fi).
Driving instructions
Summer and autumn: from Pyhätuntunturi take road 962 (Pyhä-Luosto road) and follow it for 9 km in the direction of Luosto. Then turn left onto a gravel covered road called Huttujärventie and drive along it for 2 km. At the end of the road there is a beam and a parking area. The remaining 2,5 km to Huttujärvi must be hiked. The road is in poor condition so we recommend driving carefully.
Huttujärventie road does not have winter maintenance. The nearest parking option in winter is along the Pyhä-Luosto road, about 1 km north of the Huttujärventie intersection.
By Public Transportation
There are buses (matkahuolto.fi) from Rovaniemi and Kemijärvi to Pyhä-Luosto. The bus stop closest to the hut is about 600 m from the Huttujärventie road intersection, from where it is a 5 km walk or ski to the rental hut.
Read more about the area and more detailed arrival instructions on Nationalparks.fi.
Yard
A wood heated sauna on the yard is free for hut guests to use.
On the grounds of the hut a cooking shelter (in public use), a toilet (with suction, in public use) and a wood shed (in public use). There is also a shelter for the cooled ashes from the hut and the sauna.
The yard close to the hut is also used for firewood storage, so there can sometimes be big piles of wood.
Lake Huttujärvi is about 200 m from the hut. There is no official swimming spot. You can fish in the northern half of the lake using one rod from the shore with paid Fisheries Management Fee.
Keys
The key is in a key cabinet on the hut wall. The cabinet is protected with a code. Instructions and the code are sent to you by e-mail at the time of booking.
Facilities
Heating and lighting
The hut has a stove and a fireplace. We recommend that you start to heat the wood stove first before using the fireplace to prevent smoke from coming indoors. Firewood is in the wood shed. Please use firewood sparingly. Please note that it takes some time before the hut is properly warm.
The hut has no electricity. We recommend using a headlamp, which leaves your hands free to do chores around the hut. For safety reasons, candles must be burned on a non-combustible surface and constantly monitored.
Cooking
Gas cooker and necessary cooking utensils (a pot, a frying pan, a coffee pot).
Bring your own utensils and tableware.
Drinking water
There is no running water in the hut.
There is a household water well on the grounds from where to get drinking water.
In case the well freezes or dries out water can be taken from the lake or melted from the snow, must be boiled before consumption. Drink water taken directly from nature at your own risk.
See tips on how to obtain safe drinking water on a hike (Nationalparks.fi).
Staying overnight
There are mattresses and a few emergency blankets at the hut.
Please bring your own sleeping bag.
Sauna
A wood heated sauna on the yard is free for hut guests to use. Please note that it takes some time before the sauna is properly warm.
Water for washing can be taken from the lake or melted from the snow.
Remember to empty all the water containers and buckets before you leave. This is important especially in winter time as they will break if water freezes in them.
Toilet
There is a toilet with suction emptying. Putting leftovers or litter into the toilet is prohibited.
Please bring your own toilet paper.
Waste disposal
There are no waste containers by the cabin. Visitors are advised to take their accumulated waste with them.
Metsähallitus follows the principles of litter-free hiking. Visitors are adviced to bring their own waste out of the area. Read more about hiking without littering (nationalparks.fi).
Other things to keep in mind
There are no accessible services in the hut.
Please clean the hut before you leave.
Please do not leave anything, especially food in the hut. Leftover food can attract rodents and insects.
Safety
Although Finland has a broad network for mobile phones, there are some areas in the park without signal. If this happens try to climb to a higher place or go into an open area. Check the mobile network coverage with your mobile phone operator before your trip.
There are fire alarms at wilderness huts, but we recommend to bring a 9 V battery and/or your own travel fire alarm with you.
