Arrival instructions

Hiking

  • In summer and autumn, from the village of Luosto, from the starting point of Luostonportti, it is about a 7 km walk to the hut, going counter-clockwise along the Luosto Nature Hiking Trail marked with green squares. From Luostonloma, near the Torvisen Maja café, the walking distance to the hut is about 6 km, using the trail going around the Ukko-Luosto Fell, and the Luosto Nature Hiking Trail, which diverges 2.4 km after the Torvisen Maja. Yrjölä rental hut is about 200 m away of the Luosto Nature Hiking Trail, there is a signpost and a one-way path to the hut.

  • In spring floods can prevent access to the hut.

  • There is no winter trail to the hut.

Driving instructions

  • From Highway 4 between Rovaniemi and Sodankylä, the road no. 962 turns towards Pyhä-Luosto. 10 km after the turn, along the road is the Luostonloma and Torvisen Maja parking area. In the Luosto village center you may leave your car in the large parking area at the foot of the ski slopes, or in the adjacent smaller parking area next to the trail starting point of Luostonportti.

Public transportation

Yard

A sauna, a dry toilet, a wood shed, a shelter for the ashes and a campfire site. Making fire at the campfire site is prohibited when there is a wildfire warning in effect.

Keys

The key is in a key cabinet on the hut wall. The cabinet is protected with a code. Instructions and the code are sent to you by e-mail at the time of booking.

Facilities

Heating and lighting

  • The hut has a wood stove for heating. There is firewood in the wood shed. Please use firewood sparingly. Please note that it takes some time before the hut is properly warm.

  • The hut has no electricity. We recommend using a headlamp, which leaves your hands free to do chores around the hut. For safety reasons, candles must be burned on a non-combustible surface and constantly monitored.

Cooking

  • A gas stove and necessary cooking utensils (incl. coffee pot, pot, frying pan).

  • Bring your own utensils and tableware.

Drinking water

  • There is no running water in the hut.

  • Drinking water has to be carried in or taken from the spring about 300 m from the hut (a signposted duckboard trail diverges from the Luosto Nature Hiking Trail to the water point). The brown water from the small brook near the hut (signposted from the corner of the sauna building) is suitable for washing. It is recommended to boil water from natural sources before consumption. Water quality is not tested. Drink water taken directly from nature at your own risk.

  • See tips on how to obtain safe drinking water on a hike (Nationalparks.fi).

Staying overnight

  • The hut has one bed downstairs, but the main sleeping area is located on the loft.

  • There are mattresses and a few emergency blankets.

  • Please bring your own sleeping bag.

Sauna

  • A wood heated sauna on the yard for hut guests to use. The sauna key can be found inside the main hut, always return it to its place after use. Please note that it takes some time before the sauna is properly warm.

  • Remember to empty all the water containers and buckets before you leave. This is important especially in winter time as the containers will break if water freezes in them.

Toilet

There is a dry toilet near the hut. Please bring your own toilet paper.

Waste disposal

There are no waste containers by the cabin. Visitors are advised to take their accumulated waste with them.

Metsähallitus follows the principles of litter-free hiking. Visitors are adviced to bring their own waste out of the area. Read more about hiking without littering (nationalparks.fi).

Other things to keep in mind

  • There are no accessible services in the hut.

  • In winter you might first need to shovel the snow off the hut entrance.

  • Please clean the hut before you leave.

  • Please do not leave anything, especially food in the hut. Leftover food can attract rodents and insects.

Safety

  • Although Finland has a broad network for mobile phones, there are some areas in the park without signal. If this happens try to climb to a higher place or go into an open area. Check the mobile network coverage with your mobile phone operator before your trip.

  • There are fire alarms at wilderness huts, but we recommend to bring a 9 V battery and/or your own travel fire alarm with you.

  • Read more about the area and its current information at Nationalparks.fi.
