The Háldi / Halti shared rental hut is a demanding wilderness destination. Navigation skills are needed to get to the hut. The hut is not accessible during the thaw. The hut is located in the Käsivarsi Wilderness Reserve, nestled in open, rugged terrain on vast fells. Formerly owned by Finland's Border Guard, it sits on the northern shore of a lake at the southern base of Haltitunturi Fell. The hut is approximately 1.5 km from the Nordkalott Trail, about 50 km by foot or ski to Kilpisjärvi village, and roughly 5 km from the highest point in Finland, Halti Fell.

This destination is suitable for those who are experienced in hiking in challenging conditions and wish to immerse themselves in true wilderness. The ski touring season runs from March to April, while the recommended hiking season is from early July to early September. The building also includes an open wilderness hut that accommodates 8 people.

A shared rental hut is a reservable place for an overnight stay where you can book a paid bed for 1–2 nights.

What's new

Arrival instructions

Yard

  • Outside the hut, there is a dry toilet and a woodshed on the grounds.

  • 200 metres from this hut is the old Háldi / Halti open wilderness hut, a woodshed and dry toilet.

  • During the snow-free season, it is almost impossible to find a campsite due to the rockiness of the grounds.

Keys

  • The key is in a key code box on the hut wall. The box is protected with a code. Instructions and the code are sent to you by e-mail after the payment.

  • Take lock de-icer with you just in case the box's lid is stuck due to frost. Metsähallitus does not have maintenance on site.

Facilities

Heating and lighting

  • The hut has a stove and firewood for heating. Please use firewood sparingly. Please note that it takes some time before the hut is properly warm.

  • The hut has no electricity. We recommend using a headlamp, which leaves your hands free to do chores around the hut. For safety reasons, candles must be burned on a non-combustible surface and constantly monitored.

Cooking

  • A gas stove and basic cookware (pot, frying pan, coffee pot).

Drinking water

Staying overnight

  • Bunk beds with mattresses, pillows and blankets.

  • Please bring your own linen or a sleeping bag.

  • A shared rental hut is a shared overnight accommodation where hikers sleep in the same space, usually shoulder-to-shoulder in bunk beds.

Toilet

There is a dry toilet near the hut. Please bring your own toilet paper.

Waste disposal

There are no waste containers by the cabin. Visitors are advised to take their accumulated waste with them.

Metsähallitus follows the principles of litter-free hiking. Visitors are adviced to bring their own waste out of the area. Read more about hiking without littering (nationalparks.fi).

  • Recycling point can be found at Kilpisjärvi Visitor Centre.

Other things to keep in mind

  • The firewood should only be used for heating the huts. Making campfires outdoors is prohibited if the hut does not have an official campfire site.

  • Please clean the hut before you leave.

Safety

  • Although Finland has a broad network for mobile phones, there are some areas in the park without signal. If this happens try to climb to a higher place or go into an open area. Check the mobile network coverage with your mobile phone operator before your trip.

  • There are fire alarms at wilderness huts, but we recommend to bring a 9 V battery and/or your own travel fire alarm with you.

  • Read more about the area and its current information at Nationalparks.fi.
