Honkapirtti's non-allergenic rental hut (1 room, common room, kitchen, sleeping alcove, loft, sauna) is located on a rather steep pine-dominated slope on the eastern shore of Lake Herajärvi. You may not bring pets to this non-allergenic hut. A 100 m offshoot from the Herajärvi trail leads to the hut. You can also take the same trail to access the Metsäpirtti rental hut next door. A small stream running through a wild hollow flanks the hut. Steep wooden stairs lead to a small waterfront sauna and a boat landing.

A rental hut is a place for an overnight stay that can be rented for only your use.

  • Take the trail from junction 103 to Ukko-Koli for 0.5 km until you reach the junction with the Honkapirtti sign pointing to the left. Continue the path for another 0.2 km.

Driving Instructions

Via Koli village:

  • From Koli Nature Centre Ukko, drive downwards along Ylä-Kolintie Road for 2 km and turn right towards the Koli village. Distance from the Nature Centre to the Koli village is altogether 3,6 km. When you reach the village, turn right onto Merilänrannantie towards Loma-Koli and drive for roughly 1 km, then turn right onto Rantatie road and continue for another 1 km until you reach the harbor. After Koli Harbour, continue south along Rantatie and Vesivaarantie for roughly 18 km until you reach the Herajoki stream. Just before the Herajoki bridge, turn right onto Herajärven rantatie road. See the rest from below*.

Via Ahveninen:

  • Drive along the Romppalantie road, take the Herajoentie road (road sign reads "Herajoki"). After roughly 9 km, turn left onto Vesivaaratie road at the first crossroads (to the right, the road continues as Vaaralahdentie). Immediately after the Herajoki bridge, some 500 metres from the previous crossroads, turn left onto Herajärven rantatie road.

  • *Drive the Herajärvi coastal road for about four kilometres. Turn right at every junction. At the intersection of Seppälä hut, turn left following Honkapirtti's signpost. Drive through the courtyard to the forested ridge across the field. Continue along the road until you reach a path leading to the right (junction number 103) and see the sign pointing towards Honkapirtti parking. From the parking area, continue walking to Honkapirtti. See "Hiking" for instructions.

  • Read more about the area and more detailed arrival instructions on Nationalparks.fi.

Yard

  • Sauna, a separate dry toilet, a firewood shed, a campfire site. Rowboat at the shore.

  • You can find a boat plug, oars and life jackets for four in the sauna.

  • Between the hut and the shore there is a steep slope. The lakeside is muddy and shallow.

  • Camping in the yard is prohibited.

Keys

The key is in a key cabinet on the hut wall. The cabinet is protected with a code. Instructions and the code are sent to you by e-mail at the time of booking.

Always keep the keys inside the key box, so they won’t get lost or locked inside the hut.

Facilities

Heating and lighting

  • The hut has a stove, a fireplace and firewood for heating. Please use firewood sparingly. Please note that it takes some time before the hut is properly warm.

  • In rainy weather and during low pressure, smoke will not exit the fireplaces properly. The fireplace may then smoke up the hut. It is a good idea to preheat the fireplace so that smoke exits properly. Check the heating instructions in the hut folder.

  • Solar panel powered lights and charging facility (USB socket).

  • We recommend using a headlamp, which leaves your hands free to do chores around the hut. For safety reasons, candles must be burned on a non-combustible surface and constantly monitored.

Cooking

Gas stove, pots, coffee pot and frying pan, and dishes and cutlery for six.

Drinking water

  • There is no running water in the hut.

  • Visitors must bring enough drinking and domestic water to the hut.

  • Water can also be carried from the nearby stream, the lake or Seppälä's well (about 1,2 km/direction), but water must be boiled before drinking.

  • It is also possible get clean drinking water from Koli Nature Centre Ukko.

  • Please do not use the lake water or swim in it, if you see marks of blue-green algae blooming (thl.fi).

  • Water quality is not tested. Drink water taken directly from nature at your own risk.

  • See tips on how to obtain safe drinking water on a hike (Nationalparks.fi).

Staying overnight

  • Sleeping space for two on the hut’s pull-out sofa, for one or two on the hut's divan bed (120 cm) in the alcove and for two more in separate beds in the flock. There is also one extra mattress on the flock. Mattresses, pillows and blankets.

  • Please bring your own linen or a sleeping bag.

  • In the summertime it's recommended to bring a mosquito net with you to quarantee a good night's sleep.

Sauna

  • Steep wooden stairs lead to a small waterfront sauna.

  • You must carry the water to the sauna from the lake. The water tank of the sauna stove must be full of water when warming up the sauna.

Toilet

There is a dry toilet near the hut. Please bring your own toilet paper.

Waste disposal

There are no waste containers by the cabin. Visitors are advised to take their accumulated waste with them.

Metsähallitus follows the principles of litter-free hiking. Visitors are adviced to bring their own waste out of the area. Read more about hiking without littering (nationalparks.fi).

For the biowaste, there is a composter.

Other things to keep in mind

  • There are no accessible services in the hut.

  • Dishwashing liquid, spices, fire-making equipment and toilet paper are not included.

  • Please clean the hut before you leave.

Safety

  • Although Finland has a broad network for mobile phones, there are some areas in the park without signal. If this happens try to climb to a higher place or go into an open area. Check the mobile network coverage with your mobile phone operator before your trip.

  • There are fire alarms at wilderness huts, but we recommend to bring a 9 V battery and/or your own travel fire alarm with you.

  • Read more about the area and its current information at Nationalparks.fi.
