The Kuuselankämppä rental hut is located in a wilderness zone of the Urho Kekkonen National Park. Navigation skills are needed to get to the hut. The hut is not accessible during the thaw. The nearest shops and restaurants are in Saariselkä. The hut was built in 1963 on the shore of the picturesque Lake Luirojärvi at the foot of Sokosti, the highest fell in the national park. The cabin also has a sauna.

A rental hut is a place for an overnight stay that can be rented for only your use.

Terms of reservation for huts

Reservations

The reservation day for shared rental huts and rental huts begins at 2 pm and end at 12 noon.

Bring along your invoice and proof of payment to the hut.

The use of huts and other structures in business operations requires a permit from Metsähallitus (metsa.fi).

Arrival instructions

You can get to the hut on foot or by skis from several starting points. The distance from Kiilopää is ca. 35 km, from Saariselkä ca. 50 km and from Kemihaara ca. 56 km. The hut can be reached only in summer from Aittajärvi (ca. 25 km), Raja-Jooseppi suspension bridge (ca. 45 km) and Orponen (ca. 22 km).
The route includes some river crossings. There are bridges by the River Suomujoki at Aitaoja, Kotaköngäs, and Porttikoski and by the River Luttojoki at Raja-Jooseppi.
The closest huts are the Tuiskukuru open wilderness and shared rental hut, the Lankojärvi open wilderness and shared rental hut, Hammaskuru open wilderness and shared rental hut, the Muorravaarakka open wilderness and shared rental hut, the Muorravaarakanruoktu rent turf hut, the Luirojärvi open wilderness and shared rental hut, the Rajankämppä open wilderness hut, and the Karapulju open wilderness hut.

Yard

A sauna, a campfire site, a dry toilet and a woodshed.
On the shores of Lake Luirojärvi, you will also find Luirojärvi open wilderness hut and shared rental hut, Rajankämppä open wilderness hut, the historical site of Raappana hut, national park maintenance hut and several campfire sites.
You can camp by the campfire sites.

Keys

The key is in a key cabinet on the hut wall. The cabinet is protected with a code. Instructions and the code are sent to you by e-mail at the time of booking.

Facilities

Heating and lighting

The hut has a stove and firewood for heating. Please use firewood sparingly. Please note that it takes some time before the hut is properly warm.
The hut has no electricity. We recommend using a headlamp, which leaves your hands free to do chores around the hut. For safety reasons, candles must be burned on a non-combustible surface and constantly monitored.

Cooking

A gas stove, a saucepan, and a frying pan.

Drinking water

There is no running water in the hut.
Household water is taken from the lake. It is recommended to boil water from natural sources before consumption. Water quality is not tested. Drink water taken directly from nature at your own risk.

Staying overnight

A sleeping platform, matresses and pillows.
Please bring your own linen or a sleeping bag.

Sauna

The sauna is in a separate building.
The sauna fee is 10 €/ person. The sauna cannot be reserved for private use. The sauna fee can be paid in Eräluvat webstore. Sauna fees include 25,5% VAT.
Consider other hikers, don't stay too long in the sauna. In the Luirojärvi sauna, the following schedules and instructions are followed so that everyone who wants to can access the sauna:
- Even hours: women's sauna shift
- Odd hours: men's sauna shift
- From 21:00 onwards: mixed shift

Toilet

There is a dry toilet near the hut. Please bring your own toilet paper.

Waste disposal

There are no waste containers by the cabin. Visitors are advised to take their accumulated waste with them.

Metsähallitus follows the principles of litter-free hiking. Visitors are adviced to bring their own waste out of the area. Read more about hiking without littering (nationalparks.fi).

Please clean the hut before you leave.

Safety

Although Finland has a broad network for mobile phones, there are some areas in the park without signal. If this happens try to climb to a higher place or go into an open area. Check the mobile network coverage with your mobile phone operator before your trip.
There are fire alarms at wilderness huts, but we recommend to bring a 9 V battery and/or your own travel fire alarm with you.
