Cases of the stomach flu reported in Lapland’s Käsivarsi Region – Remember hand hygiene and avoid open and rental huts 8.1.2025

Metsähallitus advises against staying overnight in the Saarijärvi, Guonjarjohka (also known as Kuonjarjoki), Meekonjärvi (Megonjávri), and Termisjärvi (Dierpmesjávri) huts in the Käsivarsi region due to a potential stomach flu outbreak.

The Megonjávri / Meekonjärvi shared rental hut is a demanding wilderness destination. Navigation skills are needed to get to the hut. The hut is not accessible during the thaw. The hut is located in the Käsivarsi Wilderness Area on the southern shore of Lake Meekonjärvi, approximately 30 km by hiking or skiing from the village of Kilpisjärvi.  The hut is suitable for hikers and skiers on the Nordkalott Trail. Near the hut rises Saivaara (Čáivárri), a fell which appears in the emblem of Käsivarsi Wilderness Area, with a peak at around 830 meters.

The ski touring season is from March to April, and in summer, the recommended hiking season is from early July to early September.

A shared rental hut is a reservable place for an overnight stay where you can book a paid bed for 1–2 nights.

Arrival instructions

Yard

  • There are three locked huts on the grounds, the northernmost of which is the shared rental hut.

  • There is a dry toilet and wood shed on the hut grounds.

  • You can camp near the hut.

Keys

The key is in a key cabinet on the hut wall. The cabinet is protected with a code. Instructions and the code are sent to you by e-mail after the payment.

Facilities

Heating and lighting

  • The hut has a wood-burning stove and firewood for heating. Please use firewood sparingly. Please note that it takes some time before the hut is properly warm.

  • The hut has no electricity. We recommend using a headlamp, which leaves your hands free to do chores around the hut. For safety reasons, candles must be burned on a non-combustible surface and constantly monitored.

Cooking

  • A gas stove and basic cookware (pot, frying pan, coffee pot).

Drinking water

Staying overnight

  • Bunk beds, matresses, blankets and pillows.

  • Please bring your own linen or a sleeping bag.

  • A shared rental hut is a shared overnight accommodation where hikers sleep in the same space, usually shoulder-to-shoulder in bunk beds.

Toilet

There is a dry toilet near the hut. Please bring your own toilet paper.

Waste disposal

There are no waste containers by the cabin. Visitors are advised to take their accumulated waste with them.

Metsähallitus follows the principles of litter-free hiking. Visitors are adviced to bring their own waste out of the area. Read more about hiking without littering (nationalparks.fi).

  • Recycling point can be found at Kilpisjärvi Visitor Centre.

Other things to keep in mind

  • Megonjávri/Meekonjärvi open wilderness hut is located approximately 500 metres northwest, on the other side of Bierfejohka. The distance to the open wilderness hut is 1,4 km along the Kalottireitti Trail via a bridge across the river.

  • The firewood should only be used for heating the huts. Making campfires outdoors is prohibited if the hut does not have an official campfire site.

  • Please clean the hut before you leave.

Safety

  • Although Finland has a broad network for mobile phones, there are some areas in the park without signal. If this happens try to climb to a higher place or go into an open area. Check the mobile network coverage with your mobile phone operator before your trip.

  • There are fire alarms at wilderness huts, but we recommend to bring a 9 V battery and/or your own travel fire alarm with you.

  • Read more about the area and its current information at Nationalparks.fi.
