The Saarijärvi Naali shared rental hut is a demanding wilderness destination. Navigation skills are needed to get to the hut. The hut is not accessible during the thaw. The shared rental hut is located approximately 12 km from Kilpisjärvi, about 600 meters from the Norwegian border at the western end of Lake Saarijärvi. This hut makes a great one-night hiking destination for those who want to experience the atmosphere of the Nordkalott Trail without committing to a full week-long hike. The hut has two sections, named Kiiruna and Naali, each equipped with bunk beds and offering 8 bed spaces. A drying room is located between the two sections. There is also an open wilderness hut nearby.

Ski touring season runs from March to April. In the summer, the recommended time for hiking is from the beginning of July to the beginning of September.

A shared rental hut is a reservable place for an overnight stay where you can book a paid bed for 1–2 nights.

Terms of reservation for huts

Reservations

The reservation day for shared rental huts and rental huts begins at 2 pm and end at 12 noon.

Bring along your invoice and proof of payment to the hut.

The use of huts and other structures in business operations requires a permit from Metsähallitus (metsa.fi).

Important safety checklist

Reservable huts are meant for those travelling by foot, skis or other means of physical movement (not motorized vehicles).

Yard

There is a separate open wilderness hut, dry toilet, wood shed and recycling point on the grounds.
You can camp on the hut grounds.

Keys

The key is in a key cabinet on the hut wall. The cabinet is protected with a code. Instructions and the code are sent to you by e-mail at the time of booking.

Facilities

Heating and lighting

The hut has a stove and firewood for heating. Please use firewood sparingly. To conserve firewood, hikers are encouraged to fill one hut first and then the other hut. Please note that it takes some time before the hut is properly warm.
The hut has no electricity. We recommend using a headlamp, which leaves your hands free to do chores around the hut. For safety reasons, candles must be burned on a non-combustible surface and constantly monitored.

Cooking

A gas stove and basic cookware (pot, frying pan, coffee pot).

Drinking water

There is no running water in the hut.
The hut is located approximately 200 meters south of the lake outlet. It is recommended to boil water from natural sources before consumption. Water quality is not tested. Drink water taken directly from nature at your own risk.

Staying overnight

Both huts have bunk beds and bed places for 8 people. Matresses, blankets and pillows.
Please bring your own linen or a sleeping bag.
A shared rental hut is a shared overnight accommodation where hikers sleep in the same space, usually shoulder-to-shoulder in bunk beds.

Toilet

There is a dry toilet near the hut. Please bring your own toilet paper.

Waste disposal

There are no waste containers by the cabin. Visitors are advised to take their accumulated waste with them.

Metsähallitus follows the principles of litter-free hiking. Visitors are adviced to bring their own waste out of the area. Read more about hiking without littering (nationalparks.fi).

Other things to keep in mind

The firewood should only be used for heating the huts. Making campfires outdoors is prohibited if the hut does not have an official campfire site.
Please clean the hut before you leave.

Safety

Although Finland has a broad network for mobile phones, there are some areas in the park without signal. If this happens try to climb to a higher place or go into an open area. Check the mobile network coverage with your mobile phone operator before your trip.
There are fire alarms at wilderness huts, but we recommend to bring a 9 V battery and/or your own travel fire alarm with you.
