The Silesjuuhâ / Silisjoki rental hut is located along the marked trail in the demanding wilderness area of Kaldoaivi on the shore of Lake Opukasjärvi, by the mouth of River Silisjoki. The hut is not accessible during the thaw. River Näätämöjoki is one of the most popular salmon fishing rivers in Finland. Its headwaters, in particular, are also excellent for grayling fishing. The wilderness character of River Näätämöjoki creates a fine atmosphere for visitors. At this river, which is located far away from roads, you will be able to fish in tranquil wilderness. In addition to the old, atmospheric log cabin, there is also a spacious sauna by the shore. Please note that there is a quota for the number of fishing licences to be sold for River Näätämöjoki.

A rental hut is a place for an overnight stay that can be rented for only your use.

The most common way of travelling to the hut is by flying to the adjacent Lake Opukasjärvi, from where the walking distance to the hut is about 1.7 km. By boat (which is to be found by the hut), the distance is about 1.2 km.

  • When boating in the area, please be particularly cautious as there are rocks and shoals in River Silisjoki and Lake Opukasjärvi.

Facilities

Heating and lighting

  • The hut has a stove, a fireplace and firewood for heating. Please use firewood sparingly. Please note that it takes some time before the hut is properly warm.

  • The hut has no electricity. We recommend using a headlamp, which leaves your hands free to do chores around the hut. For safety reasons, candles must be burned on a non-combustible surface and constantly monitored.

Cooking

  • A gas stove (incl. an oven) in the kitchenette.

  • There is no refrigerator, but a root cellar. You can bring ice from ice stations.

Drinking water

Staying overnight

  • The main cabin has room for 6 people, 3 bunk beds, a convertible sofa, a camp bed and mattresses, blankets and pillows.

  • Please bring your own bed linen or a sleeping bag.

Sauna

A shoreside sauna including a spacious sauna and a bedroom. In the bedroom, a folding wooden bed for 1‒2 persons. A stove.

Toilet

There is a dry toilet near the hut. Please bring your own toilet paper.

Waste disposal

There are waste containers by the cabin but visitors are advised to take their accumulated waste with them.

Metsähallitus follows the principles of litter-free hiking. Visitors are adviced to bring their own waste out of the area. Read more about hiking without littering (nationalparks.fi).

Other things to keep in mind

  • The hut is located in a reindeer herding area, take into account the free-grazing reindeer and keep your dog on a leash.

  • If branching off from the snowmobile track onto the lakes (ice-fishing), a cross-country traffic permit is required. You can buy the permit from Eraluvat.fi. Please note! Acquire the permit about one week before going to the destination.

  • Please clean the hut before you leave.

Safety

  • Although Finland has a broad network for mobile phones, there are some areas in the park without signal. If this happens try to climb to a higher place or go into an open area. Check the mobile network coverage with your mobile phone operator before your trip.

  • There are fire alarms at wilderness huts, but we recommend to bring a 9 V battery and/or your own travel fire alarm with you.

  • Read more about the area and its current information at Nationalparks.fi.
